A Region Full Of History, Culture, Sights And Fun

If you have a car and are prepared to take a short day trip there is a whole different world waiting to be discovered. Obviously a good guide book is a must but even with out one you can find lots to see and do for every family member, whatever their age or taste.

Levoca

Levoca is often referred to in books as the ‘jewel of the Spis crown’. In other words, it is the prettiest town in the country’s prettiest region. Originating in the 13th century, the town soon became prosperous thanks to its convenient location on key trade routes, eventually blossoming into the most important trading town in the Hungarian Kingdom. As Levoca grew in stature, it also grew in size and magnificence. Accomplished artists, architects and craftsmen were invited to the city to help make it shine; they created much of the stunning Old Town that remains today.

Spis Castle

A short way beyond Levoca is Spis Castle. With an area of over 4ha, Spis is the largest gothic castle in Central Europe. In 1993, Spis Castle was included in UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Today, the castle houses the Spis Museum. This permanent exhibition, and the superb views of the surrounding countryside that the castle offers you, makes Spis Castle well worth a visit.

The Dobsina Ice Cave

A special half-day trip from AquaCity should include the Dobsina ice cave. Less than an hour’s drive south along Route 67 towards Dobsina is the Dobsinska ladova jaskyna Ice cave (regular buses also run from Poprad, stopping near the cave’s entrance). The cave’s average temperature is -1 Celsius (30 Fahrenheit), with a 98% relative humidity, adding up to a perfect place for ice to settle and form. In 1870, Eugene Ruffini, an Italian naturalist, discovered the cave, whose 25-metre thick floor holds an estimated 145,000 cubic metres of ice. In 1887, Descending down slippery steps, the cave’s icy breath instantly chills your bones. The walls are slick and smooth, cold to the touch and massive. Considering the weight of frozen water carved into giant halls and narrow tunnels is an exhilarating experience.

Tatranská Lomnica

founded in 1892 at an altitude of 850 m Tatranská Lomnica as the largest of all Tatra settlements is a busy tourist center and offers ski slopes nearby Skalnatom Plese, good transport links and the Tatra Museum as well as a botanical garden. It is also the seat of the Tatra National Park administration. Tatranska Lomnica is also a crossroads from which you can get to Tatier with the whole range of cableways and ski lifts.

Štrbské Pleso

Founded in 1872, at an altitude of 1335 m. Strbske pleso, which is the highest settlement in the High Tatras and originally was founded around a ball, the second largest on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. Strbske Pleso was still an ideal tourist destination. Later, at the end of 1800, new clinics and sanatoriums were built alongside recreational and tourist facilities. Štrbské Pleso has excellent road and rail connections and serves as a good starting point for hikes and day trips to the mountains. During the year, the city has a rich cultural life and is also known as a ski resort. Since the 1970 World Championships, there have been many European and world skiing events, including jumping and cross-country skiing. From Strbske Pleso, tourists can reach Mengusovska valley, a mountain hotel in Popradske Pleso and the neighboring Symbolic Cemetery.
